ecoworks and Dawonia Launch Serial Renovation Project in Nuremberg
Berlin / Nuremberg, 12.09.2024 – A new era of sustainable building renovation is taking shape in Nuremberg, thanks to an innovative partnership between ecoworks, the market leader in serial, climate-neutral retrofitting, and Dawonia, one of southern Germany’s largest residential real estate companies. Together, the two partners have initiated a pioneering project to renovate 72 apartments, leveraging cutting-edge technologies such as artificial intelligence for project development, planning, and management.
The project focuses on three multi-family buildings from 1966, located on Schweidnitzer Str. and Militscher Str. in Nuremberg, with a total living area of 4,799 square meters. These buildings will undergo a serial energy retrofit to meet the KfW Efficiency House Standard 55 EE, significantly improving energy performance and resident comfort.
“We see it as our responsibility to preserve and create high-quality, affordable housing,” says Dawonia COO Sebastian Gefeller. “Our partnership with ecoworks allows us to break new ground and maximize efficiency as we work to bring our housing stock up to a sustainable, climate-friendly, and future-ready standard. We’re proud to be part of this trailblazing project.”
“Over the past two years, our development team has made significant progress in automating building modeling and project planning using artificial intelligence,” adds ecoworks founder Emanuel Heisenberg. “To make energy retrofits faster and more affordable, we are constantly advancing both software and hardware to automate the renovation industry.”
In a time of rising costs and skilled labor shortages, serial renovation based on digitalization and industrialization offers tremendous potential to cut costs while maintaining high quality-benefiting all residents. Existing buildings are upgraded with prefabricated thermal building envelopes, which are manufactured with integrated insulation, windows, thermal protection, and ventilation systems. New utility lines are routed along the exterior, making renovations more accessible and significantly reducing construction time. Prefabrication also ensures consistently high quality. The building envelope system is made from ecological materials that can be reused in a circular process after 50 to 70 years.
