First DGNB Certification of a Serial Renovation
Berlin / Nuremberg, June 15, 2026 – The joint serial renovation project by ecoworks and Dawonia in Nuremberg is the first serial renovation project ever to receive DGNB Silver certification as well as the "Qualitätssiegel Nachhaltiges Gebäude" (QNG) (Quality Seal for Sustainable Buildings). Furthermore, as the first serial renovation, the project achieves the Sustainability Class (NH Class) under the Federal Funding for Efficient Buildings (BEG).
Pioneering for the industry: With the QNG seal, the project receives recognized proof of sustainability, which not only documents high quality standards but also confirms the long-term ecological and economic viability of the solution. “We are delighted that the NH Class enables a 5 percent repayment subsidy under KfW funding for this project and, in the long term, for further follow-up projects for our customers,” says Emanuel Heisenberg, founder and CEO of ecoworks.
From Renovation Project to Certified Sustainability Reference
The joint project between ecoworks and Dawonia comprises three multi-family apartment buildings built in 1966 in Nuremberg, with a total living area of 4,799 m² and 72 apartments. “The successful implementation of the demanding KfW Efficiency House 55 NH standard by the two project teams fills us with great pride. A result that is unique in this form so far,” says Sebastian Gefeller, COO of Dawonia.
The DGNB Silver certification now achieved, including the QNG seal, confirms this ambition: With an overall compliance rate of over 50 percent and a top score of around 76 percent in the Ecology section, the project sets new standards for existing buildings undergoing serial renovation.
“Serial renovation offers great potential to bring sustainability standards to the building stock more quickly and more broadly. Due to the high level of prefabrication and standardization, quality requirements can be systematically implemented and transparently proven via certifications. We therefore see significant potential to secure the quality of renovations through certification processes and to roll out sustainable solutions on a broad scale using serial technologies,” says Dr. Christine Lemaitre, CEO of the DGNB.
