Meet the ecoworkys: Robert Abromeit

Robert Abromeit - Building Physics  for the Scalable Construction Transition

One of the minds at ecoworks ensuring our vision of a climate-neutral building stock translates into scalable products is Robert. As a graduate civil engineer with a Master's degree in "Planning Sustainable Buildings" and many years of sound experience in building physics (he is a certified expert in hygrothermal building physics) as well as a DGNB Auditor, he brings exactly the holistic expertise needed for sustainable construction. In his role as Senior Building Physicist - Construction & Products, he works at the crucial intersection where building physics requirements must be met in the practical reality of serial manufacturing.

Robert has been bringing his skills to ecoworks for over three years now. He is no mere theorist; his goal is to turn ecoworks' vision of a scalable retrofitting solution into reality. Whether the energy requirements are for an efficiency house or a net-zero building, he creates the right standard solutions for a wide variety of building types.

We spoke with Robert about his focus on product development and his goal of contributing to the decarbonization of the building stock.

Why ecoworks? The Drive for Maximum Impact

In an industry facing monumental tasks given the building sector's missed climate targets, Robert looked for the biggest lever to make a difference with his skills: a focus on existing buildings and their renovation!

This deep conviction is reflected in his daily motivation:

"It's the certainty that my work contributes to a goal that is so important to me! That feeling gives me an incredible amount of energy. A special reward is seeing the finished facade modules fly onto the house at the construction site—you get to witness the direct result of your own work and the success of the entire, amazing ecoworks team."

Product Development with Depth and Perseverance

In his product development role, Robert is concerned with much more than individual projects. It's about establishing standards and developing products that work across hundreds of buildings. Achieving this ambitious goal requires numerous skills, above all stands interdisciplinary technical competence but perseverance is crucial as well.

Product development is always interdisciplinary and requires a high degree of technical expertise as well as the ability to communicate between individual stakeholders. The development process goes through several, sometimes iterative, phases that can occasionally feel drawn out, especially considering the urgent need for action in the building sector. However, scalable solutions and products only work if they are thought through to the very last detail and extensively tested in pilot projects. For product development at ecoworks, this means keeping an eye not just on the individual building, but on the entire serial retrofitting process as an efficient and scalable system.

A Marathon for the Future

The transition in the building sector is not a sprint, and after over three years at ecoworks, Robert knows this perfectly well. True scaling requires patience and a constant willingness to learn. If he could meet his former self on his very first day, his advice would therefore be clear:

"Look forward to continuously learning. And don't fool yourself into thinking you will have serially retrofitted all suitable buildings in 3 years. It's a marathon—there is still an incredible amount of work to do!"

And for those moments when the work on technical development and strategic planning gets particularly intense, Robert already has the perfect solution in mind. If he could choose a superpower:

"Without a doubt: Teleportation! That way, I could jump from project to project in seconds—and head straight from the construction site to the beach after work!"

Until teleportation becomes part of our product range, we prefer to rely on Robert's technical expertise and his staying power, with which he makes serial retrofitting a little more scalable every single day.

Do you also want to be part of the construction revolution?

We are always looking for motivated minds who, like Robert, want to help shape the product world of tomorrow and pull the big lever for climate protection. Check out our career page and find your place in the team!
