Nürnberg – Schweidnitzer & Militscher Straße
As part of a pioneering renovation project, three multi-family buildings from 1966 on Schweidnitzer Straße and Militscher Straße in Nuremberg are undergoing comprehensive modernization. Through an innovative partnership between ecoworks and Dawonia, the project aims to set new benchmarks in sustainable building renovation by combining serial renovation methods with advanced technologies. The initiative will sharply reduce the energy consumption of the 72 apartments and create high-quality, sustainable living spaces.

Overview
The Challenge:
Three multi-family buildings on Schweidnitzer and Militscher Streets in Nuremberg, built in 1966, were marked by high energy losses and low energy efficiency ratings (classes E and F), highlighting an urgent need for modernization—a common issue for buildings of this era. With rising energy costs and ambitious climate targets, a comprehensive energy retrofit was essential. The project, led by ecoworks in partnership with Dawonia, set out to upgrade the buildings to meet the latest energy standards, achieve KfW Efficiency House 55 EE certification, and significantly enhance residents’ comfort.
The Approach:
The renovation centered on a full energy retrofit using serial renovation methods. Key measures included installing the innovative ecoworks façade system, adding a new roof with high-performance insulation, and upgrading cellar ceilings for improved energy performance. Special insulation solutions were developed for the loggia areas. To reach the KfW Efficiency House 55 EE standard, the energy concept integrated a substantial share of renewables, such as photovoltaic systems and highly efficient heating solutions. New balconies were also added to boost living quality.
The Result:
The project delivered a substantial improvement in energy efficiency, raising the buildings’ ratings from E/F to B and C, and achieving the KfW Efficiency House 55 EE level. The final energy demand is expected to drop by about 51% on average, resulting in much lower energy costs for residents. As the second major collaboration between ecoworks and Dawonia in the region, this project not only creates modern, comfortable living spaces but also demonstrates a strong commitment to climate-friendly, future-proof housing—and sets a benchmark for the industry.
