Hattingen – Karl-Roth-Weg

Future-oriented living on Karl-Roth-Weg in Hattingen: several residential buildings here have been successfully and comprehensively modernized. Acting as general contractor, ecoworks, together with hwg eG Hattingen, has demonstrated what modern serial renovation can achieve. By deploying innovative technologies, the buildings were elevated to an entirely new energy performance level in record time. The result: the residential buildings are now climate-neutral, energy-efficient, and future-proof—dramatically reducing energy consumption and creating sustainable housing for the long term.

Overview

The Challenge:
The aging residential buildings on Karl-Roth-Weg exhibited the typical weaknesses of older housing stock: significant energy losses, outdated technology, and continuously rising operating costs. A scenario that demanded swift action and comprehensive modernization. Our shared goal was to not only visually upgrade these properties through serial retrofitting but to transform them into highly efficient NetZero buildings meeting the EH 55 EE standard—laying the foundation for fully climate-neutral operations.

The Approach:
The key to our success was comprehensive serial retrofitting. The concept combines an innovative building envelope with efficient building technology and local energy generation. Using custom-fit, prefabricated facade elements with integrated windows, a complete roof renovation including insulation, and basement ceiling insulation, we maximized the buildings' energy performance. A state-of-the-art heating solution for space heating and domestic hot water, along with a new ventilation system, now guarantees maximum living comfort. The modernization is rounded off by high-performance photovoltaic systems on the roofs: they harness clean solar energy for direct use and significantly increase independence from external energy costs.

The Result:
Following the successful completion of the work, the residential buildings on Karl-Roth-Weg now present themselves at a new-build standard—awarded the A+ energy efficiency class, equipped with state-of-the-art building technology, and featuring an appealing new design. Energy demand and operating costs have been drastically reduced. This enables climate-neutral building operations and offers tenants a future-proof, sustainable home. This flagship project in Hattingen impressively proves that serial retrofitting is a true gamechanger and a key driver for the climate transition in the housing industry—for a greener Hattingen powered by clean, local energy.
